Lauhala slippers are made by weaving the dried leaves of the hala tree. The darker leaves are gathered from the beaches of Kohala on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. They are then cleaned, with the sharp thorns along the edges removed and the midrib taken out. The lighter leaves, originally from Fiji, are purchased from a Hula Supply Store.

The hala leaves are cut into uniform widths and carefully woven to create the tops of the slippers.

The sole of the slippers are made of denim fabric, with recycled cardboard used for the inner sole.

The “X”-shaped straps are sewn from available fabric and include lauhala woven inside.

The slippers are only made in the following 3 sizes:
